Flathead 0. I was really happy about that. In the summer of , the Beacon hired a third reporter, Keriann Strickland, 22, a recent UM graduate who was doing an internship at the Billings Gazette. Strickland: I came up and met with Kellyn and Dan for my job interview at the office and everything went great. Am I allowed to drink? Reece: In the early days, we spent a lot of time trying to get to know the area. While we were all familiar with Montana, none of us really knew the Flathead well; none of us had lived here.

Strickland: A lot of what we did during those first few months was just explaining what we were while also trying to figure it out ourselves. It took us awhile to figure out what the important stories were here and who were the primary characters. It took time. We all worked every weekend to put out a tiny page paper that probably should have taken us three days, and even then, we were here late into the evening trying to finish the paper on deadline day.

Vizzutti: I think my favorite part of those early days was being able to explore the valley. Being able to drive around, get lost, and just check stuff out. Testa: Not long after we launched, Sen. We rushed back to the newsroom and I filed a story that night because it was news that could not wait.

We had to get it out there. Brown: The Democratic presidential primary was super long in , and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were actually campaigning in Montana. They were also agreeing to interviews with anyone, so Dan was able to talk to both of them in late May, right around the first anniversary of the paper. Testa: I think our one-year anniversary party was the night before — it was really fun, I think we even had remote control cars on a track for some reason — but I had my interview with Obama at 7 a.

I was so nervous about sleeping in and messing it up. We were able to get these two presidential candidates on the phone and that meant a lot to the newsroom. A year before, we had to explain to every single person we called what the Flathead Beacon was, and a year later, we were talking to presidential candidates. Reece: One thing that was really important was that we were all friends.

We always hung out together. It helped build a camaraderie that filtered through the product. When I think back at the first few years, I have a lot more memories outside the office hanging out with Testa, Lido, Kellyn and Keriann. But everyone was dedicated to this effort.

Developments included in the full, year plan include a significant number of upgraded chairlifts, extensive snowmaking upgrades, a hydro-therapy spa, a new SnowSports school building, and new summer activities such as a mountain coaster. Add to those developments the fact that Saddleback Mountain, finally under new ownership, will be running the lifts once again next winter, and the Maine ski scene is pretty darned hot right now.

In , a wild fire called the Sand Fire swept through Janes's Los Angeles neighborhood, destroying his home. He lost all of his possessions, including his collection of memorabilia from his time in Hollywood. According to this Forbes article , collector Michael Eisenberg read about the fire and the destruction of Janes's home in the L.

Times and then reached out Janes's family, urging them to look for the watch in the rubble he likely heard about it in this story in the Wall Street Journal.

Eisenberg is a well-known Hollywood memorabilia collector and is constantly on the hunt. At his behest, Janes's daughter Erika did go back to the site of the fire to search for the watch in the ashes. By this account, she was successful. The watch was in rough shape to put it lightly and was promptly sent to Geary's in Los Angeles and then on to Rolex for repair. There are two letters that accompany the watch at Phillips.

Janes passed away from complications related to Alzheimer's Disease just a few months later on June 24, The second letter is from Rolex, addressed to the Janes family, thanking them for submitting their father's watch for restoration and expressing what an honor it was to service it. A photograph of the watch after the Janes house fire. As the watch exists today, it has a matte, four-line dial, despite being a from the mids. Clearly this is a replacement, but that's only natural given the condition of the watch after the fire.

The watch also has a new bezel with the pearl intact , new hands, and a new bracelet, and it also received a thorough polishing. The watch is being sold with a period-correct dial and hand set that are not original so any future owner could switch them back should they so desire.

This is where things end, according to Phillips. But, as we mentioned, some people have raised concerns that this might not be the full story.

So, what is? A look at the watch's caseback after the fire. The two biggest questions seem to be: 1 Is the watch currently in the same state it was in when Rolex finished restoring it or has it been tampered with since? The letters from Janes and Rolex are used as two critical supporting documents for the provenance of the watch. However, neither seems fully reliable for confirming the full story. Rolex's letter does not contain enough detail about the state of the watch to give us a true sense of what was done to it, and Janes's letter was written only four months before he passed away due to Alzheimer's complications.

He parlayed an early fascination with cars and motorcycles into a career as a champion racer, and later as perhaps the most famous collector of vintage automotive machines in the world. Throughout his public life, McQueen exhibited a cool demeanor and style that made him a cultural icon, admired by men, loved by famous and beautiful women, and captured for eternity by the world's top photographers.

At age 16, McQueen left Chino, traveling first to New York City and then across the country, working various jobs as a merchant marine, a lumberjack, a trinket salesman in a carnival, and an oil rigger. In , he joined the Marines.

After some early rebelliousness, he served with distinction until when he was honorably discharged. With financial assistance provided to him by the G. Bill, McQueen began taking acting lessons in New York. He began his acting career with small roles on the stage and on live TV, and made his Broadway debut in in the play A Hatful of Rain.

Later that year, at the age of 25, McQueen left New York and headed to Hollywood to further his acting career. After nabbing bit parts in several films, he landed his first starring role in the horror cult classic The Blob.

Steve McQueen became a star on TV and would soon replicate that stardom on the big screen. His next starring role, in 's The Great Escape, firmly established McQueen's box-office clout and secured his status as a superstar. The images from The Great Escape of Steve McQueen bouncing the baseball off the wall of his cell and riding his motorcycle across the countryside are etched indelibly into the annals of Hollywood history. Following this in quick succession, he starred in Love with the Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood, in the huge western hit Nevada Smith, as a poker player in The Cincinnati Kid, and as a sailor in The Sand Pebbles, a role for which he earned an Academy Award nomination.

The film was a huge box-office success featuring Steve's cool, fashionable persona and the most famous car chase scene in film history. McQueen himself did a good portion of the stunt driving at least until the insurance agents showed up on set , and the green Ford Mustang in Bullitt became one of the many vehicles made famous by association with Steve McQueen. He then starred in The Thomas Crown Affair with Faye Dunaway, in which his role as the wealthy, debonair art thief helped to cement his status as a sex-symbol and fashion-icon.

After the successes of Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, McQueen pursued his dream of creating a film about his passion: auto-racing. The result, Le Mans, was not a box-office hit, but has grown into a cult classic and is considered the most authentic film ever made about auto-racing. By this time, he was the world's highest paid actor, and he agreed to star in The Towering Inferno with Paul Newman. The Towering Inferno was a smash success and one of the highest-grossing films of all time.

He appeared in three more films, An Enemy of the People, Tom Horn, and The Hunter, but after The Towering Inferno, he retreated from the public eye to focus on more personal pursuits, chief among them collecting vintage cars and motorcycles.

As any true fan knows, McQueen was an avid motorcycle and racecar enthusiast. When his films involved cars and motorcycles, he would often perform his own stunts it was difficult to find drivers and riders as skilled as McQueen! Although the legendary jump over the fence shown in the film The Great Escape was done by friend Bud Ekins again, for insurance purposes , legend has it that McQueen did in fact complete the jump himself the morning of filming, and McQueen did log considerable screen time on his cc Triumph TR6 motorcycle.

At one point, through the magic of editing, McQueen is actually seen in a German uniform on another bike chasing himself! At one time in his life, McQueen considered being a professional race car driver, and there is no doubt he would have been successful. In fact, he was quite successful in the limited opportunities he did have to participate in top events. McQueen's first off-road motorcycle was a Triumph that Bud Ekins built for him in his shop in Southern California.

In , McQueen and Bud Ekins were part of the first official American team that competed in the renowned off-road race, the International Six Days Trials, the most challenging motorcycle event in the world. Unfortunately, McQueen didn't finish due to an accident, but his teammate Cliff Coleman finished and went home with a gold medal. The same year, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine riding a Husqvarna dirt bike.

And in , he was inducted in the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Steve McQueen died in at the age of But he remains a cultural icon to this day. A large part of his allure was the element of danger that surrounded him, and that his coolness always shone through whatever role he was playing on screen, whether a cowboy, gambler, millionaire, detective, fireman, etc.

And that same coolness was always evident in his real life, during interviews, while racing the hills of Hollywood or the Mojave Desert, and certainly in the many photographs of him that exist taken by some of the top photographers of the time. He was always effortlessly at the forefront of fashion, be it in a tuxedo, jeans and a tee shirt, racing coveralls, or shorts and nothing else.

The simple clothes and other items he wore continue to sell today as "McQueen" genuine articles, such as Barbour jackets, Persol sunglasses, and TAG Heuer watches. He is frequently cited by today's celebrities as the inspiration for their fashion choices and he still graces the covers of top magazines. Documentaries about his life continue to be produced, and he has been the subject of several popular songs. The King of Cool lives on. A television-turned-movie star, McQueen was the sexiest and toughest leading man of his day.

McQueen was nominated for an Oscar and four Golden Globe awards, and received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Although he died in , McQueen continues to be a cultural icon.

The entire team came apart at the seams with a drastic outing as they lacked proper replacements and the ones who were chosen to plug the gaps were woeful, to say the least.

It could also be used to respond to price signals. Increases in price could be analyzed with neural networks to see whether they indicate a cartel, or a genuine phenomenon such as a shortage. All this becomes possible when each community issues its own currency.

The idea is that there are necessity goods which everyone requires to buy basic amounts of even if times are tough, such as food, water, shelter, etc. Thus, members of the community should receive a certain amount of money every day , to save or spend on necessities.

Without them, they might still be working at a dead-end job, waiting for their social security paycheck. Local communities powered by Intercoin allow us to efficiently implement basic income. From the outset, it is designed to tolerate inflation of local community currencies, without lowering the value of the main Intercoin blockchain.

As prices of goods rise with respect to the local community currency, local vendors simply get paid larger amounts. This, in turn, affects the exchange rate of the local currency to the global Intercoin. Under the hood, the community currency can be used to implement local fiscal policy as a community, including how much to issue for Basic Income.

Basic Income can only really work if each local community controls the amount it issues, and. Both features will be implemented out of the box in the Community Kit. This was designed to prevent overload of the community web resources, such as denial of service or sybil attacks , but can be easily adapted to other resources, such as money.

Using the Governance feature, the community could determine the product categories and. This would, for example, allow everyone to buy food after a shortage, and then the community could figure out what to do with the excess money later, including removing it from circulation via taxes and fees.

People have asked for crypto-currencies supporting Basic Income. We have a chance to actually do it right! It lets people use native apps running on their personal devices to securely authenticate with any website.

Unlike password managers, it eliminates the need for passwords completely. It is far better to store large private keys on personal devices, which you secure with a passcode or biometrics. Other devices can be authorized with QR codes or Bluetooth, while each private key never leaves its device.

Qbix builds on recent innovation in this space by venture-backed companies such as Keybase. The Qbix Auth Protocol goes much further than just authentication, allowing each user to manage their identity across communities without being tracked by third parties. You can see your friends discovering new websites, restaurants, and other communities, and get an instantly personalized experience when you arrive, without the site knowing anything about you.

Ultimately, over the last several years at Qbix, we have finally solved all the architectural issues required to give people control over their own identity and data , while simultaneously providing a social experience across communities.

It is part of our mission to empower people and unite communities. On top of this, we have already built social apps that any community can install, and any user can seamlessly use with their friends across communities.

It is now time for Intercoin to build on top of these cryptographic innovations to implement payments across communities , governance within communities, and much more. Our user identity system is decentralized and architected like the internet.

Their private keys never leave their devices. Your contacts stay private on your phone. From your own devices, you control your identity across various communities, and choose which friends can find you in those communities. As people form organizations, they need a mechanism to arrive at a consensus before the organization takes action.

Many mechanisms have been used, including various types of direct democracy, representative democracy, and so on. When it comes to community policies regarding its internal money supply, local ordinances, or projects to fund as a community, the mechanism starts to play a vital role in how the community evolves. Having a local blockchain with Intercoin, enables all kinds of great governance mechanisms to be implemented. You can pay from your phone just like you do with your app. Official websites use.

The test mining effort, done most in part by about friends I contacted over the past 24 hours, was targeted towards raising funds for the bail project. In the future, I hope to add a feature where a trophy is matched to a non-fungible cryptocurrency token. That way a clout trophy cannot be duplicated is solely owned by the individual that should own it. The company was so trusted that people would send in blank cheques with a list of what they wanted to buy and the staff would fill in the final amount. In , a satisfied customer wrote to Farmers Trading Company: "Since I purchased the flamethrower some months ago, I have evolved a very efficient way of handling blackberry.

Another women sent clippings of her wallpaper so staff could ensure the curtains they sent her matched the colours on her walls. According to business historian Ian Hunter , when that same woman later wanted a lawn mower, she sent in some of he lawn clippings to ensure they got the right cutter. Laidlaw told customers they would have satisfaction or their money back, a new concept in the New Zealand retail at the time.

By , one in every 10 people had an account with the company. But it has not been all smooth sailing. Farmers almost didn't survive the sharemarket crash of In the period that followed, Farmers was controlled, first by a consortium of Australian banks and later Deka, the Maori Development Corporation and Foodland Associated.

In , Farmers was bought by its current owners, retailers Anne and David Norman, through their investment company James Pascoes Group. More recently, the company has faced a series of wage disputes with staff seeking higher wages and better working conditions.

Collins, who was previously managing director of clothing and general merchandise at luxury Australian department store David Jones, has been with Farmers for eight months. Farmers had evolved over time and kept up with changing customer demands, "without pushing the boundaries too far", he said.

As a result New Zealanders continued to find the store accessible, even homely, he said. For example, about 70 of the nearly staff in the new store worked at the old Newmarket store, Collins said. Those people were redeployed to other stores in Auckland while the new store was being built.

Customers walked in on opening day to find familiar faces, he said. First Retail managing director Chris Wilkinson said Farmers had a refined business model.

The company owns a number of jewellery chains in New Zealand and Australia including Pascoes the Jewellery, Whitcoulls book and stationery stores and kitchenware Stevens. Domestic and global competition had forced a strategic rethink for Farmers though the ethos has remained the same.

If you don't have a lot of money, you are going to The Warehouse or Kmart. If you are a family with young kids, its easier to shop there. They have a good loyalty programme. The beauty card is good. Farmers would probably feel the arrival of David Jones when it opened in the Newmarket mall as well, she said.

Farmers chairman Denham Shale said the new advertising campaign, being created by Colenso. It replaces the current tagline: "Full of surprises".

They purchased Australian chain Prouds from administrators in and returned it to profit within three years. Shale said sales in Farmers stores were up 3 per cent for the six months to April compared to the same period the previous year.

There have been teething problems; former chief executive Nick Lowe walked away last month with a settlement after he resigned and sued Farmers for breach of contract. He will not be replaced, with David Norman becoming group managing director and working with an executive team of three, including long-time Farmers employee Rod McDermott.

When Mark Pedowitz became president of the CW television network nine years ago, no one was sure how long he — or the network — would last. Pedowitz, a veteran TV studio executive, recognized the network needed to broaden its focus to attract larger audiences. On Friday, the CW announced that Pedowitz had signed a new multiyear deal, which will keep him at the network well beyond his 10th anniversary his previous deal, signed in , was due to expire later this year.

He also was elevated to chairman and chief executive officer, overseeing all creative and business aspects of the year-old network. The move came just three days after the CW announced that it had given early pickups for all 13 of its scripted series for the season. The decision was designed to allow producers to staff up their writing rooms — and assure viewers that the shows they were sampling would be around for at least another season.

We are going to be here for a while. But challenges remain. Entertainment — yanked its shows from Netflix as part of an industry retrenchment. They wanted the CW shows to help stock their own budding streaming services. Entertainment Form New 5th Broadcast Network.

Entertainment today announced their intent to form a new 5th network, The CW, to be launched in the fall of The new broadcasting network will be a joint venture between Warner Bros.

In an important strategic move that secures major market distribution for The CW, it was announced that Tribune Broadcasting and the CBS Corporation's UPN affiliates have agreed separately to sign year affiliation agreements with the new network. The WB and UPN will continue to broadcast their respective network schedules independently until the fall. Additionally, The CW will be able to draw from the creative talent and production resources from the top two television production studios in the business, while also seeking programming from all sources -- independent producers or other studios.

With this move, we will be creating a viable entity, one well-equipped to compete, thrive and serve all our many publics in this multi-channel media universe. As we form this new joint venture, we are also very pleased that in Dawn and John we have a management team of great creative vision and business acumen, one that will help to guide it successfully forward.

The credit goes to Barry Meyer, who continues to have tremendous vision and extraordinary business acumen as the long time leader of Warner Bros.

Entertainment, a company that we are proud to say continues to be number one in its class. Now, with the ownership role of CBS Corporation and the leadership of Leslie Moonves added to the mix, Tribune's viewers and advertisers will benefit from an even stronger programming lineup. The CW is also available in Canada on cable, satellite and IPTV providers through stations owned-and-operated by CBS Corporation and affiliates that are located within proximity to the Canada—United States border whose broadcasts of CW shows are subject to simultaneous substitution laws, if a Canadian network holds broadcast rights , and through three affiliates owned by the Tribune Company that are classified in that country as superstations — including the local feed of Chicago affiliate WGN-TV.

And who is Markus Joost? There is no such person. Did the producer not pick this up? Interesting facts but somewhat repetitive. The narrator is boring and terrible when it comes to pronunciation. Title is very misleading, why don't they call it Mr Perfect Rupert. They tried too much. This book should have included more research and facts. There are so many good stories missing. Everything in this book is already public knowledge and Pieter only sumerised. I think he rushed to publish.

Don't know what he tried to accomplish with this book. Good high level summary of the big players but the narrator kept referring to Markus Jooste as Joost.

While it gave considerable background and history of the concept of the Stellenbosch Mafia as a phrase and as a concept, and placed it within a broader context, du Toit is unfamiliar with the social concept of a mafia as being a loose grouping of people who undermine, usurp and distort free markets to benefit an in-group.

As such, his claim that the Stellenbosch Mafia is neither criminal nor a syndicate fails to address the central implied assertion of the term. Nevertheless for an insight into modern Afrikaner identity and its role in the Steinhoff Saga it contains many valuable insights.

What a pity An interesting book, read in a most peculiar sing song manner with astounding mispronunciations of the main protagonists names which changed from chapter to chapter..

Kindle Customer A popular tourist destination thanks to its location and historic centre, the student town also hosts a number of big corporate offices. This so-called mafia has top African National Congress ANC leaders in their pockets and controls everything from the judiciary to the banks, mines and stores, he told a rally in Khayelitsha, an impoverished township near Cape Town, in March.

Stellenbosch is home to many wealthy business owners. Brait, a holding company with investments in food and retail businesses, had politically connected empowerment partners.

Jooste is the chief executive of furniture manufacturer Steinhoff. Wiese, who owns a small stake in Steinhoff, sat on the Steinhoff board along with Mouton and increased his stake in the company in September. This means empowerment shareholders have often been left ou t of the growth achieved outside South Africa and it shows a compliance mentality rather than a strategic approach to empowerment, he explains.

Retailers like Pepkor and ShopRite have been under less pressure to focus on empowerment due in part to their limited reliance on government business.

Nonetheless, Pepkor sold a 7. Medu Capital, with more than R1. At Remgro, 18 of the 22 top and senior managers are white males. Shoprite has only two black board members — one female — out of All eight executive directors are white males. Combi, a successful black entrepreneur who shies away from the limelight, first established a relationship with PSG through Master Currency, the foreign-exchange trading business he founded.

The result was arguably one of the most successful empowerment partnerships in the country, resulting in Thembeka doing a number of lucrative deals with PSG, including investing in Capitec Bank, Pioneer Foods and Curro Holdings. Combi, with board seats on all four companies, is also much more than a minority shareholder with no say, which is so often the criticism levied against the beneficiaries of BEE deals. He played a crucial role in negotiations with government and the competition authorities when Pioneer was facing a R4.

Thembeka announced in September its structures will be unwound to unlock value for shareholders, with Thembeka shares to be swapped for more liquid PSG shares. Some of the shares remain restricted and will be transferred to a trust to fund bursaries for black students to obtain a private high-school education.

The BEE landscape has changed. Some say it is too slow, but I can tell you one thing: it has never been slow for me.
